Integrated Resource and Resilience Planning (IRRP)

The main objective of OptGen is to support countries globally to conduct integrated energy planning systematically, especially for a cleaner, affordable, and resilient energy future. In this context, the word resilience is drawing a lot of attention. One example is the recent energy crisis in Texas, in 2021, where an extreme weather event followed by shocks in supply (due to unavailability of some generators) and in demand (caused by the need to heat the houses) put a solid electrical market in stress.

Due to the importance of carrying out expansion planning with resilience, we have added the “Resilience (Critical scenarios)” option in OptGen. This option enables the consideration of high-impact low probability events during the expansion planning task.

Critical scenarios

The decomposition procedure adopted by OptGen adds feasibility cuts to the optimal expansion plan by solving dispatch problems that minimize the energy deficit for sub-horizons under pre-defined extreme conditions.

User defined extreme conditions

User can choose a combination of sensitivities in SDDP for a specific scenario using factors for load, outages of thermal and renewables, fuel costs, interconnections capacities and inflows.

New scenario from existing forward series

These scenarios are later associated to a time span in OptGen and to a forward series.

Feasibility of each extreme condition

During the convergence, OptGen will report the amount of infeasibility (load curtailment) for each user-defined extreme condition for each candidate plan obtained during the iterative process.



New candidate projects

Starting with version 17.0, SDDP can explicitly model the full hydrogen supply chain and its integration into the power system. Besides that, a detailed representation of CSP plants has been included. This version of OptGen includes those technologies as candidate projects for the expansion planning optimization

Hydrogen supply chain

The main chain elements are represented such as: (i) producers; (ii) transportation; (iii) storage and (iv) price-responsive hydrogen demand.

General commodities supply chain

Besides Hydrogen, any commodity can be represented (natural gas, grains, oil and others)

CSP plants

A detailed modelling of CSP plant inside OptGen and SDDP allows it to be a candidate project



New dashboard

The dashboard has been redesigned to include new information such as expansion results and new charts with solution quality.

Expansion and simulation results

OptGen’s dashboard is now very informative, having results from both phases (expansion planning task & expansion plan simulation)

Convergence graph

A new graph illustrating the lower- and upper-bound of the iterative process of solution strategy OptGen 1.

OptGen 2 operative results

New charts including results of the operative module of OptGen 2.
