SDDP-CORAL: a reliability assessment tool for planning large-scale systems with transmission network and slow and fast dynamic response storage
Planning and operating power systems consistently and safely are challenging tasks that demand sophisticated mathematical tools, especially with the advent of new fast dynamic response technologies such as batteries.
Extending traditional methods such as the non- and pseudo-sequential Monte Carlo simulation to represent such new components could lead to an intense computational burden depending on system complexity and dimension.
SDDP-CORAL is our Composite Reliability Analysis and Resource Adequacy tool, and the new version presents the novel "pseudo-interval" method developed by PSR. It efficiently represents the operators' ability to re-dispatch batteries along the duration of the component failures, such as generating units, transmission lines, and transformers.
SDDP-CORAL is part of SDDP and is available for all licensed users at no extra cost.
Composite reliability analysis and resource adequacy assessment
SDDP-CORAL uses Monte Carlo simulation and stratification techniques to select contingencies and efficiently explore the state space.
Solution methods for reliability assessment
In addition to the traditional stochastic Monte Carlo simulation methods, such as the Non-Sequential and the Pseudo-Sequential, SDDP-CORAL now offers also the possibility to use the Pseudo-Interval solution method. For more info, please check SDDP-CORAL's methodology manual.
Improved small storage devices re-dispatch
Groundbreaking Pseudo-Interval method is applied to identify failures and optimize the redispatch of the small storage devices to verify whether the system would have conditions to prevent the failure.
Integration with operating planning
SDDP-CORAL considers operation planning results such as hydro plants and batteries storage levels and hydro variable available capacity to perform more realistic simulations.

Reliability-constrained expansion planning
SDDP-CORAL extends PSR's expansion planning tool OptGen to obtain the least cost expansion plan considering reliability constraints such as maximum levels for Expected Power Not Supplied (EPNS).
Integrated solution framework
PSR has a complete set of tools for the development of robust planning schemes from the operation to the expansion level.
Economic and reliability co-optimization
OptGen uses SDDP to estimate operating costs and SDDP-CORAL to ensure that the expansion plan meets the reliability criteria. Take strategic investment decisions while coping with contingency events!
Scalability
OptGen applies Benders decomposition and integrates with SDDP and SDDP-CORAL via optimality and feasibility cuts. This scheme allows us to explore distributed processing to solve large-scale problems faster.
Improved hydro modeling
In order to make hydro modeling even more complete, new features have been added to the software. Amongst them, a hydro bypass model and the totally innovative HydroView, a new georeferenced tool for analyzing hydro network results.
Hydro bypass
The hydro bypass model allows the creation of a channel that interconnects two hydro plants, allowing the water transport representation in the operation planning problem.
New outputs
The hydro bypass model comes with new outputs, such as water flows, min/max flow violations and violation costs, which will help in the understanding of your system. Create beautiful charts with the Graph tool and PSRIO to deeply understand the system dynamics.
HydroView
HydroView is an immersive and elegant way of visualizing hydroelectric topology just inside of the SDDP platform. With a simple click on the new HydroView button, the user will be able to see all the hydro cascades, as well as a better visualization of the related outputs. Enjoy!
